Now to Master Them! For You & Your Kids

Reading a brief blog on how to master spelling troubling homophones is a little like reading a self-help blog. There are several steps and perhaps days, weeks, or months before one can claim mastery in applying the correct spelling – or the desired self-help behavior – consistently. Then, there’s always the backslide…

Take a look at the suggestions below. Several may be judged as “adult-friendly” – at home only. These are also great exercises to do with your younger children who may be struggling with spelling.

Most of these exercises involve major muscle movement. As you practice correct spelling, large muscle movement coupled with other sensory input such as tactile messages, music, spoken word, or color intensifies messages to the brain. This powerful method of sensory input increases the likelihood that the correct spellings are permanently stored. If you want to master simple homophones or other spelling words that continue to dog you, give these active practice strategies a try.

Dance, spell, trace, and jump like no one’s watching!

RAINBOW WORDS

Materials: unlined paper or index cards, pencil, colored crayons or markers

Use unlined paper of half or full sheets or large index cards.

Print the target word as large as possible in light pencil, covering the entire sheet.

Trace all letters with one color, spelling out the word letter by letter as each letter is traced.

Repeat the tracing with a different color, again spelling out the word letter by letter.

Choose a different color and repeat the process, spelling out each letter as it’s traced until all colors are used.

RIGHT & LEFT

Materials: Target word list and scotch tape, cleared desk or work space

Tape the target word list at the edge of your work space.

Place both palms face down on your work space.

Trace each word on the desk, letter by letter, while saying the letter name.

Use all the space on your desk to “write” the word with both hands, from left to right.

Repeat the process with each target word, using both hands to “write”.

SKY SPELLING/WINDOW WASHING

Materials: Target word list

Stand or sit with both arms raised in the air or stretched in front of you.

“Write” letters one by one with both hands, saying each letter’s name as you write it in the sky or “wash” a window with it.

Write each word in varied letter sizes.

Continue the process, spelling each word 3 - 5 times.

TOE TRACING

Materials: large pieces of paper with words pre-printed in large size text or your visualization of each word

Hold onto a chair or desk for balance.

With the dominant foot, trace and say each letter as the word is spelled with your toe or entire foot.

Continue the process, spelling each word letter by letter 3 - 5 times.

WALK A WORD/RUN A WORD

Materials: large pieces of paper with words pre-printed in large size text or your visualization of each word

Choose your pace and walk or run each letter as you say it, spelling the entire word.

If visualizing, vary the size of the letters you walk or run.

Vary your pace as you vary letter size and keep spelling each word as you move over it.

Repeat the process 3 - 5 times.

TOE RACING

Materials: large pieces of paper with words pre-printed in large size text or your visualization of each word

Trace each letter on tiptoe, saying letter by letter aloud as you walk the word

If visualizing, vary the size of the letters you tiptoe from one spelling to the next.

Vary your pace as you vary letter size and keep spelling each word as you move over it.

Repeat the process 3 - 5 times.

JUMP A WORD

Materials: large pieces of paper with words pre-printed in large size text or your visualization of each word

Jump or hop a word, jumping down the letters as you say them one by one.

If visualizing, vary the size of the letters you “jump” from one spelling to the next.

Vary your pace as you vary letter size and keep spelling each word as you hop or jump down it.

Repeat the process 3 - 5 times.

Employing these strategies will boost spelling skills and burn oh-so-many calories...Enjoy!
